The State Archives of Viterbo is a organ of the archives administration, a branch office of the Ministero per i beni e le attività culturali.

It is the custodian of a significant and large collection  of documents, starting from medieval notary’s records, correspondence, measures and resolutions of former pre-Italian offices and archives of the religious corporations confiscated after 1870 unification.

In addition, it maintains public and private archives,  judicial and administrative local offices records which must be given to the State Archives forty years after they no more need to their owners producers.

It’s the reason why the State Archives plays an important role in protection and conservation of cultural heritage strictly related to the task of writing and preparing catalogues, inventories, summaries and guides for usual or casual researchers.

To increase the knowledge of our cultural heritage, the State Archives of Viterbo also organizes conferences, exhibitions, tours and other educational actions for different skill level learners.

The State Archives of Viterbo is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 8.00am to 2.00pm, Tuesday and Thursday from 8.00am to 5.30pm,  throughout the year, excluding Public Holidays.
